MID CENTURY POOL HOUSe
BRIEF
The brief required a design of a space that had a modern spin on the mid-century era.

The concept was inspired by the 1970's and the cocktail era - an adults only pool house was designed with a sunken lounge and cocktail bar for entertaining around the pool.

DESIGN PROCESS
Mid-Century Modern is not my natural style, however I wanted to challenge myself and push out of my comfort zone. I compiled a mood board that gave me some direction on the contemporary angle I wanted to take. Once I settled on my location of the Noosa River, I then developed a scene in my head. I pictured an adult retreat that was pool side, overlooking the river, that had a sunken lounge/conversation pit and a sophisticated cocktail bar.
DESIGN
I grounded the overall design in nature. Large pivot doors were used to integrate the outdoors and open up the space, so it felt like a continuum from inside to out. A large slimline window, framed the view from the sunken lounge, so you felt like you were immersed in nature. The concrete walls were a modern take on mid-century modern, as well as thermal material to keep the room cool in summer. The use of marble in the archways and the splashback behind the bar elevates the space. Mid-century lighting and accessories such as the plastic puppy and marble sculpture of a hand, are statement pieces that provide a sense of nostalgia and is a nod to the mid-century modern era. I used geometric forms in the flooring and rug inside and integrated the geometric theme to the outdoor patio area with decorative breeze blocks, creating balance and harmony. The colour palette is quite neutral with black and grey, whilst pops of colour in the furniture (accented dining chairs) and rug provide a sense of playfulness.
